BORDER ECHOES (ECOS DE UNA FRONTERA)
Is a documentary that tells the story of the slayings of girls and women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, through the eyes of investigative reporter Diana Washington Valdez. The film, in English, chronicles the chilling story of the deaths that Amnesty International called "intolerable killings" in its 2003 report on Ciudad Juarez. Many of the victims were lured to the border town of Juarez to work in the hundreds of Maquiladora - or foreign and U.S. owned factories. Some victims were as young as 5 and 6 years old, and the majority of the victims were teenagers and young women. Although numerous suspects were taken into custody, activists and families of victims believe the Mexican authorities have not solved most of the crimes. The film explains why the murders are likely to continue. It also provides previously unreported and shocking details about the murders. The film served as key evidence in an international court, The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights Court in Chile, which found Mexico implicit and culpable of not doing more to protect many of the victims. Reparations to some of the families had to be made. Although the victims will not be returned to their families, The government of Mexico was held accountable and awareness has been brought to this devastating crisis.
